I seem to recall the term vaguely, but don’t know exactly what it means (and have never seen it in action, except maybe something similar which happened to alt.pizza.delivery.drivers).

Makes me wish (a) I had more time to spend on Usenet and/or (b) I had got more involved in Usenet earlier than I had, so I could’ve been “part of it” while “things were still happening”.
yeah, unfortunately it went that way. When I first joined, back in the Before Times, it was just a collection of friends who would team up with alt.cesium and be weird, occasionally having battles with alt.barney.dinosaur.die.die.die (don’t ask). Near the end of my time there – 1998 or so, it got stupid. Trolling and shite. It was…stupid and idiotic. Besides, I had more important things to pay attention to, like my vague attempt at trying to start my thesis.
No you don’t. :D It was such a time-waster. I spent more time there, than I did in the pubs, which could be a Good Thing™, but in my books, it was a Bad Thing™ since I missed out on a lot of good, yummy cider and curry. Mmmmm-mmmm
