It’s been a long time
since I posted a “here’s what’s been going on” sort of entry, so here’s
what’s been going on.
Candice and I are all settled in in the new apartment, pretty
much. There are still some boxes in places and there’s not much up on
the walls and we still have to buy window coverings and there’s a bit
more furniture to buy (and still a couple of computer desks to sell),
but a new couch was purchased and all of the rooms are pretty near
done.
The new place is fantastic. The size feels just right, and the huge
windows are a great improvement over the last place, but most of all I
love the neighbourhood. No more Wal-Mart parking lot outside our window,
no more buses driving by the bedroom window all night, no more fire
trucks’ sirens at all hours. It’s a five-minute walk to either a Loblaws
superstore or a 24-hour Loeb, and a ten-minute walk to all the shops in
Westboro Village, including the Harvest Loaf bakery and my favorite
coffee shop, Bridgehead. Ten to fifteen minutes the other way puts you
in Hintonburg — I haven’t explored that way much, but among other
things there’s the Parkdale Market from spring til fall. It’s a bit late
in the year but next year it’s going to be so easy to get local produce.
We haven’t had the right mix of spare time, weather and daylight to
stroll down to the river and explore the paths through the woods
across the road from us, but soon!
Work’s interesting these days — we’re beginning to plan a
migration from our current rather organic NT setup to a done-over-right
Active Directory setup, including new hardware. Most of the AD
planning is being done by a consultant, which is fine by me, but
it does mean that I’m going to be involved in building the thing,
so I might finally get familiar enough with the way things are to
be able to take on a bit of that side of things day to day. It’s
Windows, but it’s also job security, so it ought to be fine. Related
reorganization also means that I’ll be able to have people covering
me for the stuff that really only I know, so I think this is going
to work out pretty well.
I think that’s about it. If nothing else that’s enough that I can start
posting about little day-to-day stuff again.
